THE DICKIES The term "punk technician" might sound like an oxymoron, but Dickies guitarist Stan Lee has been called worse things. It may seem moronic at first, but The Dickies'humorous take on an otherwise angst-ridden form of music (in songs like "Stuck in a Pagoda with TriciaToyota") proves that punk doesn't have to be bereft of musical values to be effective."If you slow down our songs you'll discover some clever chord changes and a lot of melody," says Lee.In the late '70s, punk rockers didn't play leads, they didn't do covers, and they sure as hell didn't have a keyboard player in the band. But The Dickies did all these things, and despite being politically incorrect, they became a major influence on the SoCal punk scene. According to Lee, "I saw Steve Marriott play with Humble Pie, and he was jumping up and down hitting open chords and I said, 'I can do that.' And then the punk thing happened. Most of the punk bands just played barre chords, and I was a little further along than that. You had the Ramones, who weren't doing any leads at all, and I felt I might be able to put some lead guitar in." Lee's miserly lead playing on the band's upbeat originals and on their irreverent covers of rock classics such as Black Sabbath's "Paranoid" and Led Zeppelin' "Communication Breakdown" is a textbook lesson in economy of scale. "We have a very simple formula," he says. "Sixteenth notes on the bass, half-time on the hi-hat, and ripping chords on top of that." The Dickies are up to their old tricks on the 14-song Idjit Savant album, roll-calling such pop culture icons as Marlon Brando, Axl Rose, and the Starship Enterprise, and playing with an energy that puts Offspring and Green Day to shame. "It's genius but at the same time it's absurd stupidity," says Lee. "It's a fine line we're walking. I'm just like Forrest Gump - a retarded guy that's brilliant." -
